SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Korea Bizwire) – A new era of communication has dawned with the introduction of real-time translation services during phone calls, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology on smartphones.

SK Telecom announced on December 14 the launch of ‘A.Dot Interpretation Call,’ a service that offers real-time translation during iPhone calls. Users can select the desired language—Korean, English, Japanese, or Chinese—by simply pressing the interpretation call icon. During the call, recipients are notified, “Please wait, your call will now be translated by a translator for interpretation purposes,” followed by real-time translation.

SK’s new service is the first of its kind among domestic phone applications, available to SK Telecom iPhone users through the AI assistant app ‘A.Dot.’ The company anticipates this service to be particularly beneficial for foreign residents in Korea who are not proficient in Korean.

Yong-Hoon Kim, Head of AI Services at SK Telecom, stated, “We will continue to work hard to enhance A.Dot into a sophisticated AI personal assistant by expanding support for various languages.”

Samsung Electronics also recently announced plans to include the ‘AI Live Interpretation Call’ feature in Galaxy smartphones equipped with ‘On-Device AI.’ According to Samsung, this translation function requires no additional app installation and ensures security as the call content is not transmitted to the cloud or external servers.

This form of real-time translation is the first of its kind, and is expected to be featured in the upcoming flagship Galaxy S24 series smartphones, slated for release as early as January of next year.
