SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — Sales of luxury imported cars priced over 100 million won (US$81,100) set a new record in South Korea last year.
The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association reported that 71,899 luxury vehicles priced over 100 million won were sold last year, an increase of 10.3 percent from the previous year.
The figure reached 25.3 percent of all imported car sales, up 1.8 percentage points from the previous year.
Mercedes-Benz Korea sold 31,576 units priced at more than 100 million won last year, for an increase of 9.5 percent from the previous year while BMW Korea sold 22,372 similarly-priced units, up by 20.1 percent.
Among them, 47,399 units were purchased by corporate bodies and 24,500 by private individuals.
“The overall increase in car prices has resulted in more cars exceeding the 100 million won threshold,” said Lee Hang-gu, a researcher at the Korea Automotive Technology Institute.
