Record-High Fine Dust Keeps Stifling South Koreans

SEOUL, March 26 (Korea Bizwire)A fine dust onslaught choking the country continued for the third straight day Monday, with concentration levels in Seoul and the surrounding Gyeonggi Province over the weekend marking the highest-ever since measurement began in 2015, a weather agency said.

On Sunday, levels hit all-time highs of 99 micrograms per cubic meter (㎍/㎥) in Seoul and 102 ㎍/㎥ in Gyeonggi, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. The previous records, categorized as “bad,” were 95 ㎍/㎥ on Dec. 30 and 100 ㎍/㎥ on Jan. 16, respectively.

The bad levels showed no signs of easing off in Seoul and its neighboring areas early Monday morning, with local governments introducing emergency measures against fine dust, including the reduced operation of vehicles.

As of 9 a.m., the figure stood at 88 ㎍/㎥ in Seoul, 68 ㎍/㎥ in Gwangju, 67 ㎍/㎥ in North Chungcheong Province, 66 ㎍/㎥ in Gyeonggi, 56 ㎍/㎥ on Jeju Island, 55 ㎍/㎥ in Daejeon, 53 ㎍/㎥ in Busan and 52 ㎍/㎥ in Gangwon Province, all in the “bad” category, the agency said.
