SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Korea Bizwire)Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of French auto firm Renault S.A., unveiled the SM6 on Wednesday, targeting the premium mid-size sedan market in South Korea.

The SM6 is a locally adjusted version of the Talisman, which was launched in France last July. It was developed jointly by Renault Samsung and the French automaker to spearhead their premium strategy.

This became the sixth vehicle model of Renault Samsung Motors’ lineup being sold in the Korean market. Its production recently started at its plant in the southern port city of Busan and its official launch is scheduled for March.

The SM6, among other things, boasts the largest cabin space among same-class models that could possibly compete with other large-size sedans, the company said.

The SM6 is 4,849 millimeters long, similar to other same-segment vehicles but its wheel base is 2,810 mm, the same as the SM7 large-size sedan of Renault Samsung, which offers a relatively large inside space for passengers.

The latest model is equipped with many advanced features intended to enhance convenience, some of which are rarely introduced to mid-size sedans, the company said.

Drivers can choose diverse driving modes, including sports, comfort and eco, while the stop-and-start function that prevents idling when the car stops is applied to all trims. The head-up display projecting driving information on the windshield and all-round parking sensors are also available.

“For its Korean launch, we analyzed driving conditions and customer tastes closely. Based on the results, the SM6 came out with a combination of powertrain, chassis, interior, exterior and infotainment features that differentiate from the European Talisman,” the company said in a press release.

Renault Samsung hopes that the SM6, which comes in four powertrains, including the 2-liter GDI and the 1.6-liter turbon GDI, as well as 1.5-liter diesel engines, helps it rise to third in domestic sales by appealing to more customers with its advanced and differentiated features.

Prices for Korean customers have not been decided, though the Talisman is being sold in Europe for prices ranging from 35 million won (US$28,944) to 50 million won. Renault Samsung said that it will try to provide lower prices than in Europe.’
