SEOUL, June 9 (Korea Bizwire) – A new study suggests that consistent consumption of red ginseng improves memory function of Alzheimer’s patients.
A research team led by Dr. Huh Jae-hyeok, a neurologist from the Seoul Medical Center, conducted a study of 14 Alzheimer’s patients on red ginseng consumption and its relationship to cognitive functions to discover the effects. The full research findings were published in the latest edition of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, an international scientific journal.
The patients consumed 4.5 grams of red ginseng per day for 12 weeks. Following the 12-week period, the team conducted the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), which assesses cognitive functions, and an electroephalography (EEG), a brainwave examination that shows brain functions.
As a result of the ginseng consumption, the average FAB score increased from 9.07 points prior to the study to 10.5 points after 12 weeks of observation. The highest possible score on the FAB is 18 points.
The frontal lobe is located at the front of the brain, and is largely responsible for mental functions and voluntary movements such as walking. Its deterioration is known to cause declined memory and intelligence.
The patients also showed improved alpha wave activity, which is a type of a brain wave also responsible for memory and intelligence.
“Our research showed that red ginseng helps vitalize the frontal lobe by increasing alpha wave activity,” said Dr. Huh. “Regular consumption of red ginseng will help improve the memory function of Alzheimer’s patients.”
