SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — Researchers at Seoul National University have developed a new monitoring system for turbines at power plants, the first of its kind in the world.

The research team led by professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering Yoon Byung-dong said on Monday it had developed a turbine monitoring system capable of self-learning data.

Power plant turbines are typically monitored directly by humans via sensors and other equipment, wasting a great amount of time and labor.

According to the researchers, under the new monitoring system, computers will be able to carry out the same functions as humans with higher accuracy and better time efficiency.

This also means friction errors and misalignments in turbines should be discovered more quickly.

The researchers already have filed a patent application for the technology, which is being adopted at the POSCO Hyungsan Power Plant to keep an eye on turbines.

“We hope the new technology can be used in the field of clean energy with wind turbines, as well as other areas such as rotation systems used in commercial robots,” said Yoon.

The findings were published in the international academic journal IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics (TIE).
