Researchers Detect Anti-Inflammatory Effect in Carrot Leaves

SEOUL, July 14 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine said Thursday its researchers have detected an anti-inflammatory effect in carrot leaves, which are typically wasted or solely used as animal feed.

Flavonoid glycosides, found in the extract of carrot leaves, are compounds formed through the combination of flavonoids and saccharides.

These compounds have demonstrated various biological effects, such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial properties.

By eliminating the saccharide, the extract is converted into a low-molecule flavone compound, which enhances its solubility and bioavailability. This conversion enables a wider range of stronger biological activation.

To remove the saccharide-combined section within the flavonoid compound, the research team employed enzyme treatment. They then compared this compound with extracts from regular carrots and carrot leaves.

The study revealed that the enzyme-treated carrot leaf compound effectively reduces the occurrence of inflammation elements by up to 23 percent compared to the existing extracts.
