DAEJEON, May 5 (Korea Bizwire)A South Korean research team has developed a new air purification technology using water drops.

The Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) said Tuesday that it had developed and successfully demonstrated a new electrostatic spray-based air purification technology.

Electrostatic spray makes use of high voltage electricity when spraying water like a mist to give water drops electrostatic properties. The electrostatic water drops attract fine dust, which then clings to them.

The newly developed technology does not use any filter. Unlike existing filter-type air purifiers, it can reduce the burden of replacing filters on a regular basis, as well as preventing the increase in the fan’s consumption power.

The research team demonstrated the new technology on the platform of Janghanpyeong Station on Seoul’s subway line No. 5.

The demonstration proved that the new technology can reduce the density of PM 2.5 ultrafine dust (ultrafine particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter) within the platform by up to 98 percent.

In addition, the oxygenated water and ozone water created when making the electrostatic spray contributed to reducing floating bacteria by more than 99.9 percent and volatile organic compounds by more than 96 percent.

Poor indoor air quality can present various challenges. Whether or not you have respiratory problems, poor indoor air can affect you, especially in the long run. Most people don’t realize, however, that they don’t have to live with poor air quality in their home. The variety of air purifiers on the market presents many options for keeping your family healthy. These devices efficiently attack and destroy harmful particles to keep your air quality at its best.

The use of electrostatic spray technology to make water drops electrostatic is a brilliant innovation. I’m excited to see how this technology develops and if it can be implemented on a larger scale. It could make a significant impact on air quality and public health, not just in South Korea but potentially worldwide.
