SEOUL, May 1 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s rural development authority announced on Wednesday the success of an experimental rice farm in Sharjah, a desert region in the United Arab Emirates, with the crop set to be harvested early this month.

The Rural Development Administration (RDA) sowed Asemi, a type of rice for dry areas developed locally, on Nov. 25 last year. It is part of an agricultural technology cooperation project discussed between the two countries in 2018.

The estimated yield is 763 kilograms per 10 ares, up 40 percent from when the same variety was grown in South Korea.

Analysts say that this is the result of abundant sunshine suitable for rice cultivation, proper nutrient supply, and water management.

In order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the RDA operated a remote management system to check the weather, water management, and growth conditions via a video feed and to respond in a timely manner when access to the site was restricted.
