INCHEON, Nov.9 (Korea Bizwire) – A crackdown on illegal parking with the participation of the residents of Namgu, Incheon, is showing great results.
Residents take pictures of illegally parked cars with their smartphones, and send them to the authorities. Once the pictures are sent, the owner of the car is fined.
The local government announced that 1,640 illegally parked cars had been reported by residents as of October. Among the registered cases, 131 resulted in fines.
The number of illegal parking reports from local residents is increasing every year. While 220 were registered in 2013, the number tripled to 622 last year.
The local government anticipates that this kind of crackdown method could banish the blind spots of illegal parking enforcement resulting from a lack of manpower and equipment.
To report illegally parked cars, one should first download the ‘Life inconveniences smartphone application’ through the application store of each service provider.
After selecting the ‘report illegal parking’ item, by sending two pictures taken five minutes apart along with a message, registration is complete.
When the application is used to take a picture, information on when and where the picture was taken is automatically recorded.
The targets of the crackdown are cars that parked for more than five minutes in areas where parking is restricted, such as sidewalks, crossroads and bus stops.
Currently, the local government is cracking down on illegally parked cars with the help of 13 civil workers, 16 part-timers, 39 CCTV cameras, and six patrol cars.
