Residents of Seoul’s Gangnam District Have Highest Average Salary

SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Korea Bizwire)Seoul’s affluent Gangnam District has the highest average salary per resident among all cities, counties and districts in the country, a lawmaker said Wednesday.

Rep. Kim Hoi-jae of the main opposition Democratic Party analyzed the Annual National Tax Statistics report, which showed that each Gangnam resident made an average of 74.4 million won (US$55,600) as of 2020, almost double the national average.

Gangnam was followed by Seoul’s Seocho District (74.1 million won), Seoul’s Yongsan District (64.7 million won), the city of Gwacheon in Gyeonggi Province (61 million won), Seoul’s Songpa District (51.9 million won) and Seongnam in Gyeonggi Province (50 million won).

Among the top 10 cities, counties and districts with the highest average salary, eight were located in Seoul.

The 10 regions with the lowest salary included Busan’s Jung District (25.2 million won), Daegu’s Seo District (25.9 million won), the city of Dongducheon in Gyeonggi Province (28 million won) as well as Pocheon in Gyeonggi Province and Euiseong County in North Gyeongsang Province (28.2 million won each).

Among metropolitan cities and provinces, Ulsan’s five counties and districts surpassed the nationwide average salary while Gangwon Province, North Chungcheong Province, Gwangju, North Jeolla Province and Jeju Province had no cities, counties or districts exceeding the national average.
