NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — A resolution on the designation of Nov. 22 as “Kimchi Day,” named after a Korean traditional side dish, will be brought to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for its adoption in December, a Korean American heritage museum said Wednesday.
The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability plans to send H. Res. 280 on the popular fermented dish to the floor for its adoption without a vote on Dec. 6, according to the Museum of Korean American Heritage.
The move comes as South Korea and the United States mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their bilateral alliance this year, amid joint efforts to broaden the scope of their partnership beyond its traditional security focus.
Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) has submitted the resolution with backing from more than a dozen other lawmakers, noting that this year marks the 120th anniversary of the first Korean immigrants to arrive in the U.S. and the 70th anniversary of the bilateral alliance.
A resolution on the designation was first submitted last year, but it failed to get through the House.
An official at the museum said Democratic and Republican leaders coordinated a decision to adopt the resolution without a vote in a show of their appreciation to the Korean American community.
The resolution notes that UNESCO recognized the Korean traditional process of preparing kimchi, “kimjang,” on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
It also states that kimchi has been widely acknowledged as a probiotic food item with well-established positive health benefits, and that there has been a growing interest in and popularity of kimchi as a dish in the U.S.
