SEOUL, April 7 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Road Traffic Authority (KoRoad) said Wednesday it would introduce artificial intelligence (AI) to upgrade the function of its big data-based ‘road danger prediction system.’

The system is a traffic accident risk prediction system that KoRoad established for the first time in South Korea.

The prediction system classifies the degree of road risk into four grades – safe, danger, caution and serious – by analyzing big data information on traffic accidents, weather forecasts and other unexpected situation.

Users are able to check real-time weather information, abrupt incidents such as mass rallies, accidents and construction, and the degree of road risk on a driving route.

KoRoad plans to designate the areas with a high risk of traffic accidents as ‘danger-intensive areas’ this year as well as to start applying an AI model to provide a real-time guide on risk forecasting and other information on road environments.

The agency expects the upgrade of the road danger prediction system to help authorities to improve facilities in traffic accident risk-prone areas as well as to ensure better implementation of road safety projects.
