SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Korea Bizwire)The state arms procurement agency has kicked off a project to renovate the Navy’s 4,400-ton warships with homegrown technology for enhanced efficiency in operating the fleet, officials said Wednesday.

A meeting to discuss details of the upgrade for the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class destroyers took place at the office of defense firm Hanhwa Systems in Gumi, 233 kilometers southeast of Seoul, earlier in the day, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

Under the plan, DAPA plans to fit the 4,400-ton warships with a homegrown combat system as well as an upgraded towed array sonar and guided missile equipment for enhanced anti-submarine and air defense capabilities, it said.

DAPA expected the upgrade involving homegrown technologies to enable a more efficient operation and maintenance of the warships.

Commissioned in 2003, the 4,400-ton class destroyers are considered key assets of the Navy.
