TOKYO, Feb. 13 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea, China and Japan are close to finalizing the arrangements to hold a trilateral meeting of their top diplomats late next month, a report said Thursday.
The meeting, set to be held in Tokyo, is most likely to take place March 22, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun daily reported, citing multiple government sources.
Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will pay a three-day visit to Tokyo from March 21 to join their Japanese counterpart, Takeshi Iwaya, for the talks, according to the newspaper.
The three-way meeting will come about a year after the neighboring countries had their foreign ministers’ gathering in South Korea’s southern city of Busan in November 2023.
If realized, Cho is expected to hold separate bilateral talks with Wang and Iwaya.
The top diplomat-level talks usually take place before the three countries have their leaders’ summit. Japan is the chair for this year’s gatherings.
The date for the expected summit has yet to be announced. Japanese media have reported that Tokyo had pushed to hold the trilateral summit in spring, but the timeline has become uncertain given the political situation in Korea, following the martial law attempt by now impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.
