SEOUL, Jan. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korea Environment Corp., an organization affiliated with the Ministry of Environment, will create a waste management framework in the Himalayas starting from Monday.

The project is the very first in which the Korea Environment Corp. has won a contract directly from the World Bank. The project is expected to end at the end of September this year, and will cost 280 million won (US$240,000).

The corporation plans to identify the rapidly increasing occurrence of garbage disposal by tourists in Himalayan mountainous regions across Pakistan, India and Nepal and propose systems and policies to properly manage garbage disposal.

Specific details of the project include assessing the status of waste management in the target area; understanding the impact of waste on the environment and ecosystem in the target area; understanding the role of the organization and regulations for waste management in the target area; and developing an integrated waste management policy for the target area.

The project will cover Annapurna and Mount Everest in Nepal, Himachal Pradesh in India, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. Each area is popular among tourists, which has increased the volume of waste in need of disposal.
