SEOUL, July 3 (Korea Bizwire) — A new system has been implemented to detect and eliminate illegal drone flights near five major nuclear power plants in South Korea.
According to the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, a drone detection system project initiated in 2022 has been recently deployed at each major power plant across the country as a protective measure against drones.
As a result, the mere act of activating a drone within a 3-kilometer radius of the power plant will trigger its detection by a radio frequency (RF) scanner.
The power plant’s situation room will have the capability to track and locate the drone, as well as determine if it is airborne.
Additionally, between five and ten mobile jammers, which disrupt the drone’s frequency to neutralize it, have been distributed to each major power plant.
Once the situation room receives information about a drone flight, a patrol will be dispatched to neutralize the drone.
If necessary, the power plant can request assistance from the military, police, and firefighters.
Last year, a total of 107 instances of drone flights were detected in the vicinity of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant, located in the southeastern city of Busan.
