SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea has replaced obsolete tactical air navigation (TACAN) systems at air bases with a new homegrown system, the state arms procurement agency said Wednesday, in an update bolstering air operations support.
The 30.7 billion-won (US$21.5 million) project to install the new fixed-base system has been recently completed with deployment to 13 air bases nationwide, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
DAPA said the new system, wholly developed with homegrown technology, is expected to enable the smoother operation and maintenance of the facility as all relevant processes can now be carried out domestically.
Dubbed the “lighthouse in the sky,” TACAN is a navigation system for military aircraft that provides bearing and distance information.
