BUSAN, Aug. 23 (Korea Bizwire)The state-run Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency has announced the developed of new artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can predict the extinction of sea fog occurring in the areas of Incheon Port in Incheon and Haeundae Beach in Busan.

The sea fog that disrupts sailing safety and marine activities repeats a process of generation and extinction within a short period of time, as is impacted by multiple factors such as the difference in temperature between sea surface and atmosphere and humidity.

The new technology features the combination of real-time observation data at a time when the sea fog occurs with state-of-the-art AI technology, enabling the prediction of whether the sea fog will lift in one to three hours later.

Starting from 2018, the agency, together with a private company, has been engaged in the joint development of the technology. After registering a patent in June last year, it published its research in the international academic journal Sensors.

Through strenuous research together with related organizations, research institutes, universities and private companies, the agency plans to establish the system to provide sea fog generation and extinction information by 2022.
