SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Korea Bizwire)SK Innovation Co., a South Korean manufacturer of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, announced Monday that Right Route, an eco-friendly social enterprise sponsored by the company, has developed a high-end fabric by upcycling old EV battery separators.

Lithium-ion battery separators are a core component of EV batteries, smartphones and other IT devices that ensure their performance and safety.

Experts have shown that every month, faulty separators being scrapped due to scratches or surplus production can cover up to 130 times the size of a football stadium (1 million square meters).

Right Route combined the separators with wool to develop a new, high-end wool-based fabric.

This fabric has been inspired by the fact that the surface of the separators is similar to Gore-tex, ensuring effective ventilation and waterproof capabilities.

The separators and the wool have been attached using an eco-friendly adhesive to create a wool fabric with permeability and waterproof capabilities.
