SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Residents of Turkana County, one of the driest counties in Kenya, showed deep satisfaction in the SCORE project, an effort to improve the quality of potable water.
The project, began in 2019, is one of South Korea’s aid projects in which the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) invested US$5.5 million and $1.5 million, respectively. The project ends next year.
UNICEF said the project has led to 99 drilling projects in Turkana County, creating 71 groundwater wells.
KOICA and UNICEF set up a water supply system that draws the water out from underground by operating a solar power pump.
The project has enabled some 98,400 residents in the county to access clean water and lowered the risk of waterborne diseases caused by drinking unsanitized water.
“It’s like the water is sent from God. It has changed our lives. We now have clean water,” one of the county’s village foremen said.
