S. Korea Keeps Top Spot in New Shipbuilding Orders in April

SEOUL, May 6 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean shipbuilders, led by industry leader Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., clinched the largest amount of new orders in April, retaining the top spot for a third consecutive month, data showed Wednesday.

According to the data compiled by global researcher Clarkson Research Services, South Korean shipyards bagged new orders totaling 533,000 compensated gross tons (CGTs) last month.

Chinese rivals took orders worth 295,000 CGTs, followed by Japanese ones with 149,000 CGTs, the data showed.

South Korea has retained its status as the world’s leading shipbuilding country in terms of new orders since February.

In April alone, orders totaling 1.74 million CGTs, or 75 ships, were placed around the globe, down 440,000 CGTs or 3 vessels, from the previous month, the data showed.

In the first four months of the year, South Korean shipbuilders secured new shipbuilding orders totaling 3.53 million CGTs, followed by Japan with 1.77 million CGTs and China with 1.71 million CGTs.

As of end-April, China had the largest order backlog totaling 42.15 million CGTs, trailed down by South Korea with 32.41 million CGTs and Japan with 19.34 million CGTs, according to the data.
