SEOUL, May 10 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s industry ministry on Friday discussed potential cooperation in renewable energy projects with Kyrgyzstan, aiming to strengthen partnerships and explore joint opportunities.

Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun met his Kyrgyz counterpart Taalaibek Ibraev in Seoul to seek broader bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

During the meeting, Ahn emphasized that the government has been rolling out various efforts to promote the use of renewable energy sources and asked for Bishkek’s close attention to South Korean firms wishing to participate in related projects in Kyrgyzstan.

“As Kyrgyzstan depends on hydroelectricity for more than 80 percent of its energy demand, it also holds great potential in other renewable energy sectors, including solar and wind power generation,” the ministry said in a statement.

The two countries also agreed to seek personnel and technology exchanges to address climate change and bolster energy security, the ministry added.

Ahn also invited Kyrgyzstan to participate in the World Climate Expo in September in the southeastern port city of Busan.

On the sidelines of the visit, the state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. also inked a memorandum of understanding with Kyrgyzstan to join hands in the development of new technologies in the energy industry, including the high-voltage direct current transmission system.
