SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Korea Bizwire)A new program will be developed that will use big data to calculate ‘safe delivery time’, aimed at preventing food delivery riders from dangerous riding practices such as speeding to meet a tight delivery schedule.

It has been pointed out that the current delivery schedule time calculated by food delivery apps is one of the main culprits pushing riders towards competing over speed.

The Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, an organization affiliated with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, said on Sunday that it embarked on a real time monitoring project as part of efforts to ease the speed competition among delivery riders.

The project is aimed at developing a system that uses big data to calculate a safe delivery time for each delivery situation.

First, the agency will establish big data records concerning the riding practices of 100 delivery riders in five areas, including Seoul and Busan, over the next four months.

The two-wheelers will be installed with Internet of Things (IoT) equipment mounted with an LTE communication module that will enable real-time monitoring of their riding practices.

The IoT equipment will trace delivery speeds and the velocity change when the direction changes using GPS signals.

On the basis of such information, the agency plans to develop a system that can calculate safe delivery time for each delivery situation by analyzing real-time traffic volume and weather changes.
