SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Korea Bizwire)A new project to assign addresses to objects, spaces, and underground facilities will first start among five designated ‘smart cities’.

The Ministry of Interior and Safety (MOIS) announced Wednesday that it plans to sign an agreement with various agencies to assign so-called ‘three-dimensional addresses’ in five designated smart cities including Sejong, Busan, Siheung, Daegu, and Jeonju.

Under the agreement, the MOIS, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Korea Land and Housing Corp., and Korea Water Resources Corp. will manage the project until its completion in 2025.

The government plans to assign 3D addresses first in the smart cities, and then expand the scope of the initiative to cities across the country.

The new 3D address policy aims to go beyond the current, two-dimensional address policy by including height information, which will enable authorities to assign addresses not only to buildings and roads, but also to objects, spaces, and underground locations.

The new address system will allow users to locate non-stationary places such as underground markets, bridges, and food trucks, which can be used for drones, autonomous driving vehicles, and other new technologies.

The MOIS has been carrying out the 3D address program in Suwon, Jincheon County, and underground spaces around Jamsil Station since 2018.
