SEOUL, Dec. 8 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said Wednesday it will send 101 milk cows and milk cow sperm for artificial insemination by air to Nepal on Dec. 22 in collaboration with non-profit organization Heifer International Korea.
This will be the first time that South Korea sends milk cows and breeding bulls to support an overseas country.
The milk cows were prepared through Heifer International Korea’s crowdfunding, donations by domestic dairy farms, and support by NongHyup Agribusiness Group Inc. and the Seoul Dairy Cooperative.
After sending the milk cows to small agriculture households in the pilot dairy village in Sindhuli, the ministry plans to offer customized education for the agriculture households.
The ministry also plans to dispatch domestic experts to implement follow-up measures as well as to help improve breeding management through a mobile app.
In Nepal, the annual milk yield of native milk cows and cross-bred species stands at 880 kilograms and 3,000 kilograms, respectively, lower than that of Korean milk cows.
