SEOUL, April 1 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Thursday it will launch a project to establish a fish farming development center and strengthen related capabilities as part of efforts to transfer inland fish farming technology to Kyrgyzstan.

The landlocked country in Central Asia is now engaged in inland fish farming using the river and lake formed by the melting of the perpetual snow of the Tian Shan Mountains.

Issyk-Kul Province, the beneficiary of this project, is the country’s representative inland fish farming area with a focus on sturgeon, rainbow trout and catfish.

However, due to outdated fish farming equipment and processing and distribution technologies, the area’s fishery production and distribution volume remained low.

Against this backdrop, the Kyrgyzstan government asked South Korea to extend cooperation.

The ministry plans to inject a total of 5 billion won (US$4.11 million) during the period from 2022 to 2026 for this official development assistance (ODA) project.

Under this project, the ministry plans to replace outdated equipment at the province’s Tonsky fish farm, as well as to provide aid with the construction of a training facility to foster professionals in the areas of fish farming, processing and distribution.

In addition, the ministry also plans to carry out a program to transfer South Korea’s fishery technology through personnel exchange and joint studies.
