SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea plans to upgrade the access management of government buildings by introducing state-of-the-art technology such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based facial recognition and QR code pass cards.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said Sunday that it would improve the access management of government buildings in the administrative capital of Sejong in order to ensure higher convenience and better security for public servants and visitors alike.

First of all, it decided to run an AI-based facial recognition system on a trial basis in the three buildings of the Sejong government complex.

At present, the buildings’ access control uses both facial recognition and public servant ID card to confirm the identification of visitors. Under the new system, however, identification can be verified simply through the AI-based facial recognition.

The ministry said that the new system would eliminate the step of verifying the public servant ID cards, thereby minimizing face-to-face contact and preventing the spread of infectious disease.

It would also make it easier to introduce a wider variety of services, including temperature checks.

After running the AI-based facial recognition system on a trial basis in collaboration with a domestic start-up, the ministry plans to expand the application of the system to the entire Sejong government complex on the basis of the results of user satisfaction surveys and the improvement of errors.
