S. Korean Automakers Break 100,000 Mark in Combined EV Sales

SEOUL, Dec. 1 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean automakers saw their combined domestic electric vehicle (EV) sales surpass the 100,000 mark this year for the first time.

The country’s five carmakers — Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Corp., GM Korea Co., Renault Korea Motors Co. and SsangYong Motor Co. — saw their combined EV sales reach 107,783 units in the first ten months of this year, up 80 percent year on year, according to the data from the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association.

By brand, Hyundai ranked first with 60,573 units sold, followed by Kia with 44,088 units, GM Korea with 2,497 units, Renault Korea with 516 units, and SsangYong with 109 units.

Their combined EV sales have been growing at an explosive rate, rising from 2,558 units in 2015 to 13,303 units in 2017 and 73,873 units last year, up 136 percent year on year.
