S. Korean Children’s Song ‘Baby Shark’ Stays on Billboard’s Hot 100 for 2nd Week

SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Korea Bizwire)The South Korean children’s song “Baby Shark” was ranked on Billboard’s Hot 100 main singles chart this week after debuting on the list a week earlier, results showed Thursday.

The English version of the song by Pinkfong, a children’s education entertainment brand, whose Korean title is “Shark Family,” came in 38th on the Hot 100 chart for the week of Jan. 19, according to the chart update.

Last week, the song first landed on the same list as the 32nd popular single, the first non-pop Korean song ever to be listed on the Hot 100.

Only a few big name Korean pop singers have had their songs listed on the highly competitive chart, including Psy, Wonder Girls and BTS whose latest song “Idol” ranked as high as 11th.

“Baby Shark” was released in 2015 by SmartStudy, an education entertainment startup that owns Pinkfong. The rhythmic two-minute song introduces a family of sharks and their underwater hunt for small fish.

The video of the song’s English language version comes with a matching dance choreography and a captivating refrain of “Doo doo doo doo doo doo.”

The same song previously was ranked on Britain’s Official Singles Chart in August, having been picked as one of the most viewed YouTube videos last year.

As of Wednesday, the video had garnered 2.19 billion YouTube views.
