GURI, March 27 (Korea Bizwire) — The city of Guri has developed a machine that transforms cigarette butts into compost and is now trialing the technology on government office grounds.

Placed inside a smoking booth, the machine is the first of its kind to be implemented in South Korea.

Through a process of disintegration and fermentation, microorganisms harmless to humans create usable compost out of the leftovers of cigarettes. The compost has the added advantage of repelling pests.

Guri has indicated it will place the cigarette butt composting machines around the city after it has concluded the initial trial and conducted an overview of the results. (Image: Guri)
