SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Korea Bizwire) – A visit to South Korea by Japanese Emperor Akihito will serve as a good opportunity for the two neighboring countries to move their relations forward, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said Monday.

While speaking at a parliamentary audit of her ministry, Kang added, however, that it is difficult to predict when such a visit will take place because the right circumstances should be created for it.

“Should the emperor’s visit take place, we believed it will be a big opportunity for the development of relations between the two countries,” Kang said after a ruling party lawmaker, Rep. Sim Jae-kwon, said he believes a visit from the Japanese emperor is necessary.

The remark came as talk has recently surfaced of using the emperor’s visit as a chance to mend relations between the two countries that have badly frayed for years due to tensions over issues related to Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea.
