S. Korean Lab Testing Autonomous Shuttle Bus

DAEJEON, June 10 (Korea Bizwire)An unmanned, autonomous shuttle bus without a driver’s seat developed by South Korean researchers is set to begin testing.

The state-funded Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) said Wednesday that AutoVe, an electric vehicle manufactured by a local South Korean firm equipped with its artificial intelligence (AI)-based autonomous driving technology, will begin operations inside ETRI campus.

AutoVe can be hailed by a mobile device. The vehicle automatically brings the passenger to the destination requested by the passenger, which is understood by AutoVe’s voice recognition system.

It maintains a speed of 25 kilometers per hour in accordance with safety regulations. The vehicle is capable of responding to intersections without traffic lights, crosswalks, and standstill vehicles.

“For this initiative, we have set up 100,000 kilometers of domestic traffic data, and 200 terabytes of machine learning data worth 14 million pages,” said Choi Jeong-dan, head of ETRI’s Intelligent Robotics Research Division.
