SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – The Ministry of National Defense announced on Sunday that it plans to renovate 2,000 commissaries across all military bases in South Korea.
Military stores will be transformed from utilitarian storage spaces where goods are displayed without much regard for esthetics, into comfortable spaces where servicemembers can enjoy coffee or read books.
A postal exchange (PX) at the Army boot camp will ‘reopen’ on Monday, after renovations that began in August are completed.
“We’ve waited so long for our new PX,” said Ju Jeong-hun, a new recruit for the Army. “I would love to take my parents to the store when they come over when my military training is finished.”
The new military stores will be renamed as WA Marts, after the military’s Welfare Agency, and are expected to be popular among recruits.
“We are finally catching up with advanced nations to bring better welfare services to our servicemembers,” said Lt. Col. Yu Sang-pil, director of PX renovation at the MND Welfare Agency.
“Welfare links directly to combat power, which is why we will continue to expand our renovation project.”
