S. Korean Ranks Second in Social Media Usage Worldwide: Data

SEOUL, June 17 (Korea Bizwire) 89 percent of South Koreans use social media, with the country surpassing Taiwan to rank second in terms of social media usage around the world, data showed Wednesday.

Market researcher DMC Media reported that according to a survey conducted by global consulting firm We Are Social Singapore, 89.3 percent of South Koreans used social media in January, which was 1.7 times higher than the global average of 53.6 percent.

South Korea ranked second in the rate of social media usage after the United Arab Emirates, replacing Taiwan.

Another market researcher Nielsen Koreanclick survey showed that some 34.9 million people in South Korea used social media in April.

This was 0.5 percent lower than last year, primarily affected by a 6.8 percent drop in the number of people using PCs to access social media.

Sorted by social media platforms, YouTube garnered the highest number of unique visitors (UV), with the platform visited by 37.7 million people.

Instagram was the most used social media platform among teens, 20-somethings and 30-somethings. A majority of those in their 40s and 50s used Naver Band.
