S. Koreans Turn to Urban Farming to Overcome ‘Corona Blues’

SEOUL, March 30 (Korea Bizwire)The number of South Koreans who seek consolation by cultivating small vegetable gardens or growing companion plants on rooftops or balconies is on the rise.

In a nutshell, they are ‘farming’ using small outdoor spaces like balconies inside apartments.

In the midst of an increase in the amount of time spent at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a growing number of people are attempting to console themselves by cultivating small vegetable gardens.

Also increasing is the number of individuals who share a substantial amount of land on a community level to cultivate vegetable gardens.

The ‘Mujigae Teotbat’ (Rainbow Vegetable Garden), located in Seongdong Ward in Seoul, is a space where people can cultivate vegetables by leasing about 11 square meters of land per household.

This site is run from the spring planting season to the autumn season of harvesting.

As people have a growing interest in gardening, some organizations have been created to provide plant kits for experience or to offer non-face-to-face education on how to grow vegetables.

Experts say that these type of gardening activities are effective in managing the sense of stress and isolation.
