S. Korea’s Toy Imports Hit Record High This Year

SEOUL, Oct. 15 (Korea Bizwire)The amount of toy imports in South Korea rose to a record level in the first eight months of this year on robust demand for character robots, government data showed Thursday.

The inbound shipment of kids’ toys reached a record US$444 million in the January-August period, up 6.6 percent from $416 million the previous year, according to the data compiled by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and its affiliated Korea Culture Information Service Agency.

The purchase of doll-type toys, including robots, posted the biggest growth, up nearly 25 percent on-year to $67 million in the cited period, the data showed.

That of electric, or motorized vehicles for children, also increased 7 percent to $34 million over the tallied months.

“Increasing popularity of character robots that transform themselves fueled the demand for such goods, most of which are imported from China,” an industry source said.

The overall toy exports by local vendors have amounted to a cumulative $54.8 million from January to August, up 1.2 percent from a year ago.

The sales of vehicle toys to overseas markets grew the most, with a 122.7 percent on-year gain to $4.1 million, the data showed.
