Sales of Hyundai, Kia Cars in EU Market Hit Record High

BRUSSELS, Nov. 18 (Korea Bizwire) – Sales of South Korea’s top carmaker, Hyundai Motor Co., and its affiliate, Kia Motors Corp., in the European auto market hit a record high in 2016, industry data showed Friday. 

Cumulative sales of the two automakers in the 28-member European Union (EU) came to an all-time high of 779,115 units in the first 10 months of the year, according to the data compiled by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

Sales of Hyundai’s models in the region climbed 8.6 percent on-year to 415,360 units over the cited period, and the corresponding figure for Kia also jumped 13.8 percent on-year to 363,755 units over the cited period, according to the data. 

ACEA data showed that the number of new car sales in the 28 EU nations rose 7.2 percent on-year to 12.35 million units in the first 10 months of this year. 

The combined market share of the South Korean duo in the region also edged up 0.2 percentage point on-year to 6.3 percent over cited period, the eighth-highest figure among automakers selling in the EU, the ACEA data showed. 

Among car brands sold in Europe, Volkswagen Group clinched the largest portion of the market with a 23.9 percent market share over the cited period, according to the data.
