Sales of Pet Supplies Jump Prior to Chuseok Holiday

SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Korea Bizwire)The pet market is scrambling to prepare for the upcoming Chuseok holiday as more consumers are adopting pets.

SSG.com, Shinsegae Group’s integrated online shopping platform, reported that compared to last year, sales of pet supplies jumped by 43 percent two weeks prior to Chuseok (Sept. 11-17).

Sales of travel cages or carriers for pets also jumped by 44.7 percent, while pet leash sales jumped by 24 percent.

Gmarket’s pet supply sales jumped by 22 percent during the same period. Sales of hanboks (traditional Korean clothing) for cats surged by 200 percent, while sales of dog outfits jumped by 20 percent.

Sales of pet food, treats, nutrients and toys jumped between 10 and 50 percent overall.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs reported last year that 26.4 percent of all South Korean households own pets.
