SEOUL, Jan. 4 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics’ Internet of Things (IoT) platform, SmartThings, is set to extend to Hyundai Motor Group’s connected car services, forging a seamless integration between vehicles and homes.

Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Group have announced a business partnership to develop Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services. This collaboration, disclosed on January 4, promises to improve the interactive capabilities between Hyundai and Kia vehicles and home appliances.

Under this agreement, future customers of Hyundai and Kia will be able to control home electronic devices remotely from their vehicle using the infotainment system interface or voice commands.

Conversely, using AI speakers, TVs, or smartphone applications at home, they will be able to remotely control their vehicle.

For instance, while driving home, users will be able to activate home appliances like air conditioners, TVs, or lights in advance. Similarly, before leaving home, they will be able to check their vehicle’s status and pre-start heating or cooling systems.

While preparing for work, they will also be able to view essential information such as the battery level and range of their electric vehicle on their smartphones and TVs.

Hyundai and Kia are committed to developing a stable infotainment system that can support these services and plan to extend these capabilities to existing vehicles through wireless (Over-The-Air) updates.

Chanwoo Park, vice president of Samsung Electronics, expressed optimism about the partnership, anticipating that it will enable optimized Home-to-Car services and integrated home energy management, tailored to future lifestyles. He also highlighted the potential to enhance customer experiences by connecting the SmartThings platform with automobiles.

Haeyoung Kwon, Head of the Infotainment Development Center at Hyundai and Kia, views this initiative as an opportunity to make connected car services more diverse and convenient. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to accelerating technological development to enrich the journeys of Hyundai and Kia customers worldwide.

Additionally, Samsung Electronics is collaborating with its subsidiary Harman to boost in-vehicle experiences. Harman’s ‘Ready Upgrade’ digital cockpit package, capable of hardware and software upgrades, will significantly enhance Car-to-Home service capabilities as it can be equipped with SmartThings, Samsung explained.
