Samsung, Apple Roll Out AR Services

SEOUL, April 29 (Korea Bizwire)Smartphone producers such as Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. are focusing on building augmented reality (AR) ecosystems by increasing the variety of AR services they have on offer.

Samsung recently introduced a beta version of AR Canvas, while Apple added an AR Space function to its video-making Clips app.

AR Canvas offers various AR-based tools to users to decorate the surrounding environment.

Users can bring 3D text, brushes, scanned images, gif stickers, and gallery photos into the AR space for decoration.

AR Space, a newly added feature to Apple’s Clips app, uses a Lidar scanner to scan the surrounding environment, and apply various video filters to make video sharing more fun.

These efforts to introduce various AR services are seen as a move to establish AR ecosystems that can fully utilize 5G networks, while creative and exclusive smartphone photo or video-shooting experience.

“As 5G smartphones are growing in popularity, a variety of AR content and apps are also increasing in number, each of which have yet to take dominance in the market,” an indistry official said.

“Now that the hardware allows for a better AR experience, new attempts should be made to meet customer needs.”
