SEOUL, Apr. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics announced on April 16 that its flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone series incorporates an amount of recycled plastic equivalent to approximately 50 million 500-milliliter plastic water bottles.

In a post from its official newsroom, the company estimated that the recycled plastic used in the Galaxy S24 series this year alone will reach about 100 tons. This weight matches the plastic required to manufacture 10 million 500-milliliter plastic bottles.

Samsung has developed high-performance plastic materials from recycled sources, such as discarded fishing nets and plastic bottles, for use in its Galaxy smartphones.

Notably, the Galaxy S24 series features plastic derived from recycled thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) byproducts generated during shoe manufacturing processes.

Furthermore, the company forecasts that approximately 110 tons of recycled aluminum—equivalent to around 9 million 330-milliliter aluminum beverage cans—will be utilized in the same period.

The product packaging boxes employ 100 percent recycled paper material. By the end of this year, Samsung anticipates using approximately 2,760 tons of recycled paper, matching the weight of about 552 million sheets of A4 paper. Stacked together, this amount would equal the height of 71 Burj Khalifas, the tallest building in the world, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Marking a first for Galaxy products, the S24 series also incorporates recycled minerals, including cobalt and rare earth elements, into its key components.

Additionally, Samsung has been operating the Generation17 project in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 2019, supporting youth leaders worldwide in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
