SEOUL, Feb. 22 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday denied media reports that the South Korean tech giant will expand into the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV business.
The denial comes amid local reports suggesting that Samsung Electronics is on the verge of turning back to OLED TV, which is championed by numerous TV makers, including its local archrival, LG Electronics Inc.
“It is not true,” Han Jong-hee, president of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, told reporters after a forum in Seoul. “The company will push forward a two-track method.”
The company announced during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) thatit will push ahead with the two-track strategy in its flagship TV business by adding its micro-level light-emitting diode (LED) lineup to its existing quantum dot LED (QLED) TVs.
The term “QLED” is a marketing acronym created by the electronics giant for its high-end liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs that use quantum-dot technology. Quantum-dot sets are an improvement on existing LCD technology, which the majority of TVs on the market use.
Han further said the company will start selling its latest MicroLED TV, dubbed the Wall, in August. The Wall, unveiled during the CES, is the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED 146-inch TV.
The MicroLED technology featured in The Wall eliminates the need for color filters or backlight, yet allows the screen to offer consumers the ultimate viewing experience, the company said.
