SEOUL, May 2 (Korea Bizwire) —Samsung Electronics is reportedly developing its own generative AI solution optimized for translation and document summarization while temporarily restricting the use of ChatGPT and other third-party generative AI tools within its in-house operations.
On April 28, Samsung announced its decision to limit the use of generative AI through in-house PCs, citing security concerns. As the content entered into generative AI is stored and transmitted on an external server, it is vulnerable to security breaches, which may result in the misuse of confidential company information.
The DX division has consequently suspended the internal use of ChatGPT and other third-party generative AI tools, and is instead utilizing various AI models for translation, document summarization, and software development support.
Samsung Electronics plans to develop its proprietary AI tools internally and deploy generative AI in a secure environment to enhance work convenience and efficiency.
A recent survey conducted by the DX division revealed that many employees use ChatGPT for quick information acquisition and work convenience. Consequently, Samsung Electronics is developing proprietary AI solutions to cater to the high demand for generative AI in translation and document summarization.
To prevent confidential information leaks, the company is also considering additional measures to block the upload of work-related information.
The company has also warned employees about the potential risks of using generative AI on mobile devices outside of the company and has asked employees not to enter any company-related or personal information.
Overseas companies in the United States and Japan have started to limit the use of ChatGPT due to similar concerns, raising concerns about the potential misuse of ChatGPT and other generative AI and the possibility of leaking core information.
According to a survey conducted by Samsung Electronics’ DX division, 65 percent of respondents believe that there are security risks associated with using generative AI in-house.
The Device Solution (DS) division of Samsung Electronics has reported cases of misuse of ChatGPT, including the uploading of the entire internal source code and internal emails.
Consequently, the DS division posted a message on the bulletin board warning against the misuse of ChatGPT, and team leaders have educated their members on the scope of ChatGPT use and introduced measures such as limiting the number of characters when using the tool.
