LAS VEGAS/SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Display announced it will commence mass production of the world’s first rollable OLED panels for laptops in April 2025, with the innovative display set to debut in Lenovo’s upcoming ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable.

At a media event held in Las Vegas, coinciding with CES 2025, Samsung Display confirmed its partnership with Lenovo, which unveiled the ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable earlier this week. Lenovo plans to launch the product globally in June.

A Revolutionary Rollable Design

The ThinkBook Plus G6 Rollable features a display that can extend vertically, expanding the screen size by approximately 50%. In its standard configuration, the device operates as a 14-inch laptop with a 5:4 aspect ratio. When rolled out, the screen transforms into a 16.7-inch display with an 8:9 aspect ratio, offering a larger and more immersive viewing experience.

Cutting-Edge Technology

Samsung Display’s rollable panel integrates its Eco Square OLED technology, previously used in premium smartphone displays. This innovation eliminates the need for a separate polarizer by embedding its function within the panel, reducing thickness and improving power efficiency by approximately 30%.

“Rollable displays inherently face stress across the entire screen, but leveraging our extensive experience in foldable technology, we’ve ensured durability in this product,” said Kim Young-seok, Senior Vice President of IT Sales at Samsung Display. “This technology is set to revolutionize portability and user experience in IT devices, particularly laptops.”

Introduction of Micro LED for Smartwatches

Samsung Display also unveiled its first micro LED display for smartwatches. The 2.1-inch rectangular panel features over 700,000 micro LEDs smaller than 30 micrometers each, delivering unmatched clarity with a 326 PPI resolution and a peak brightness of 4,000 nits, the highest ever for smartwatch displays.

These advancements reaffirm Samsung Display’s position at the forefront of display innovation, offering groundbreaking solutions that elevate functionality and user experience across various consumer electronics.
