SEOUL, March 20 (Korea Bizwire) — The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has ruled in favor of Samsung Display in its OLED patent infringement case against Chinese display manufacturer BOE, strengthening Samsung’s position in ongoing legal battles with Chinese competitors.
According to industry sources on Wednesday, the ITC determined on March 19 (local time) that BOE, along with U.S.-based component wholesalers Injured Gadget and Wholesale Gadget Parts, had infringed on three and four of Samsung Display’s OLED patents, respectively.
This decision comes more than two years after Samsung Display first filed its complaint in December 2022.
Despite the ruling, the ITC opted not to impose an import ban on BOE products, citing no significant impact on the U.S. display industry.
Samsung Display views the outcome as a pivotal victory that could bolster its position in future disputes. “We will continue to protect the intellectual property we’ve built through years of heavy investment and innovation in OLED technology, and will respond firmly to patent infringements to maintain our competitive edge,” the company said in a statement.
Separately, Samsung Display is awaiting a preliminary decision later this month on a separate ITC lawsuit filed in October 2024, alleging BOE and its affiliates illegally obtained trade secrets through former employees and partners of Samsung Display.
Additionally, Samsung Display has launched another patent infringement lawsuit against BOE in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas as part of its broader effort to protect its technological leadership in the OLED sector.
