SEOUL, July 17 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., a major electronics components maker, said Sunday it will commence mass production of power inductors specifically designed for cameras in self-driving and electric vehicles.
A power inductor is a component necessary to supply stable electricity coming from the battery to the semiconductor.
The company’s developed power inductor is a thin-film product that forms thin coils on top of a substrate.
Compared to wire-wound inductors, which have coils wound around magnetic materials, the developed power inductor offers advantages in terms of productivity and miniaturization.
Building on their extensive expertise in multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC)-based materials, the company independently created a magnetic material with outstanding characteristics and minimal loss.
MLCC is a core component within electric devices that controls the stable flow of current within electric product circuits.
Through the implementation of a photolithography technique utilized in semiconductor substrate production, Samsung Electro-Mechanics achieved precise coil formation at minute intervals.
A single car typically requires around 100 power inductors, more than twice the quantity needed for a smartphone.
With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles and self-driving systems, the demand for power inductors in automobiles is projected to double by 2030.
