SEOUL, May 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics Co. Chairman Lee Jae-yong has expressed his commitment to joining the international community’s efforts for safe, innovative and inclusive artificial intelligence (AI) technology at a global summit, the company said Wednesday.
“Beyond impacting industrial innovation and economic growth, AI is fundamentally changing the way we live, work and interact with the world,” Lee said in a video conference during the leaders’ session of the AI Seoul Summit the previous day, according to Samsung Electronics.
“We must have a global discussion about how to minimize its misuse and maximize its benefits in the process of innovation,” he added.
The AI Seoul Summit is a follow-up to the inaugural global AI safety summit held in Britain last November, where 28 countries and the European Union adopted the Bletchley Declaration, the first global guidelines on AI safety.
Co-hosted by President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the leader’s session adopted the Seoul Declaration, calling for efforts to promote safe, innovative and inclusive AI.
The Samsung Electronics chairman participated in the leaders’ session, along with leaders from the Group of Seven countries, including the United States and Britain, and representatives from global tech firms, including Tesla, Meta, Google, Microsoft and Naver.
Lee said Samsung Electronics’ commitment to innovation and inclusion aligns with the Seoul Declaration, pledging to incorporate AI technology into the company’s services and products to enhance access and inclusion in an environmentally sustainable way.
“One of Samsung’s core values is to contribute to human society through technology,” he said. “Samsung is committed to actively engaging with the global community to develop safe, inclusive and sustainable AI technologies.”
Samsung Electronics has recently placed its business focus on on-device AI, with its first AI smartphone Galaxy S24 series being the forefront of this initiative.
