SEOUL, Aug. 4 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics has announced that they will accept the recommendations from mediation related to occupational diseases that occur on semiconductor manufacturing lines.
The company will create an in-house fund of 100 billion won, and use the money for compensation and research to prevent the disease. In addition, employees of their subcontractors and subsidiaries will also be able to receive compensation from the fund.
Industry watchers interpret Samsung’s actions as coming from the desperate acknowledgement that the past should not influence the competitiveness of the domestic semiconductor industry.
The mediation committee recommended that Samsung donate 100 billion won to set up a corporate body to execute projects with public benefits.
Instead, Samsung will set up a 100 billion won fund that will be used for compensation and research. “Setting up a corporate body to distribute money cannot be the solution. Once we create a fund, we can execute compensation without the procedures of setting up a corporate body.”
The company also plans to compensate employees of its suppliers and subsidiaries under the same standards as its own employees.
Furthermore, in order to quickly disburse funds, Samsung will form a committee to receive and process applications for compensation.
In addition, a medical diagnosis team will be formed to help enhance the health rights of the employees.
Samsung Electronics state their determination. “As the quick execution of our plans is the biggest issue, we start taking steps right away to keep our promise. We will do our best to include the opinions of the families so that our efforts can lead to actual results.”
