SEOUL, May 26 (Korea Bizwire)Samsung Electronics has set out to strengthen its software capabilities, based on the realization that it will be unable to maintain its leadership position in hardware without concurrent effort to improve competitiveness in the software area.

Followed by the establishment of a dedicated organization late last year, the company recently held a conference inviting scores of in-house software developers. Its future direction, according to a company official, would include security, Internet of Things, big data, and Tizen, the Linux-based operating system for devices.

Samsung Electronics said on May 23 that it held the 2014 Software Conference at its Digital City in Suwon, southern outskirts of Seoul, intended to beef up software competitiveness and expedite new technology information sharing.

The three-day event between May 20 and 22 was participated by 300 developers and software managers from Samsung companies all across the world. As part of the event, it also held a contest among 100 software programmers who had been selected through a strict screening process six months earlier.

In the latter half of last year, the company created a new organization called “The Software Institute of Soft Technology” as a way to leapfrog in the area of software development that it considers needs improvement.

Combined with the Software Center established in 2011 and the Device Solutions Center opened recently, the new institute will play an essential role in bringing up the company’s software capabilities.

Choi Jong-deok, vice president in charge of the company’s software center, said, “Lately the importance of software, design, and services for companies to be ahead of competition. We will hold conferences and other opportunities to share creative ideas.”
